Farmers' Market in Reno

We were assigned to cover an event in our small town of Reno that is newsworthy. Since this is a summer class, covering the annual farmers' market was not such a bad idea! Fruits, vegetables and even Tupperwares, it seems that the farmers' market is breaking its boundaries by expanding its variety! Hit the play button and read along below with the transcript.

In the middle of a sunny, summer day, shoppers at the Summit not only have the option to buy clothes from department and retail stores but they also can buy fresh produce, fruits and pastries at the heart of the outlet mall.

Shirley’s Farmers’ markets run from June to September every Tuesday and Saturday at the Summit and at the Village.

Like many summer goals, Jennifer, a graduate student from the University of Nevada, Reno, plans on changing her diet in a positive way.

104 0:14 "I WENT TO THE FARMER’S MARKET BECAUSE I WANTED TO CHANGE MY DIET. I HEARD THAT BUYING PRODUCE AT A LOCAL FARMER’S MARKET IS A GOOD WAY TO START IMPROVING MY DIET.”

104 0:29 “YEAH, I BOUGHT THESE STRAWBERRIES FROM RODRIGUEZ FARMS AND THEY LOOK SO DELICIOUS!”

Out with fast food and in with fresh produce and vegetables, she visits the farmers’ market.

Though vendors, such as the Cipponeri Family Farm has been participating for quite a long time. They say they are more than happy to provide fruits to places that do not get a lot fresh produce.

/// HEATHER MARCHANT ACT 2 ///

WE’RE SELLING LOTS FRUIT, MOSTLY STONE FRUITS BUT WE HAVE ORANGES AND CHERRIES TOO.

I KNOW FOR THIS AREA, IT’S A LOT HARDER TO GET FRUIT. WHERE WE’RE FROM, EVERYONE HAS FRUIT: THAT’S WHERE ALL THE FRUIT COMES FROM. SO TO GET FRESH FRUIT INSTEAD OF GETTING IT FROM A GROCERY STORE IS A BIG BENEFIT:

Not only do we see fresh vegetables, fruits and meat but also jewelry, pet foods and even Tupperwares.

/// SHILO ACT 3 ///

090 "I AM A TUPPERWARE DIRECTOR.

TUPPERWARE’S BEEN AROUND FOR 68 YEARS AND IT IS ALL 100% BPA FREE AND HELPS PEOPLE SAVE TIME, SPACE, MONEY AND WASTE!

WE HAVE A GREAT FRIDGE SMART SYSTEM THAT IS ON SALE. PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO ADD LIFE TO THEIR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND BEING ABLE TO GET THE BEST PRODUCT IN THEIR KITCHEN.

/// END ACT ///

/// CHRIS TISDALE MARKET MANAGER: ACT 4:

0095 0:38 MY AUNT, SHIRLEY, IS THE ONE WHO STARTED MARKETS IN NEVADA 25 YEARS AGO.

WE HAVE BEEN AT THE SUMMIT FOR 5 YEARS

ANY TOWN SHOULD HAVE FARMERS MARKET SINCE IT’S ALL ABOUT GOOD EATING. ALL OF MY FARMERS GROW THE VERY BEST PRODUCE. THEY USE THE VERY BEST WAYS TO GROW THAT PRODUCE. IT’S NOT A BIG FACTORY. ALL THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SEE IN THESE TENTS ARE THE FARMERS. THEY ACTUALLY GROW, PICK AND SELL THEIR OWN STUFF AND THAT’S A LOT BETTER THAN SOME BIG GIANT CORPORATE FARM THAT’S JUST SELLING YOU STUFF AT THE GROCERY STORE.

// END ACT //

Chris hopes that the farmers market will not only improve business, but also improve everyone’s lifestyle.
