Perry Healey is not your typical cyclist. He is a a touring cyclist. Onward and forward, Perry challenges himself by going the extra mile, literally, when he's on his bike. He talks about his recent trip, which he covered almost 600 miles in 8 weeks from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Talk about cardio, right? Well, this allowed him to expand more on his passion for biking and actually plans on biking to South America in the future, he said. Overall, Perry definitely tells us that the journey is much more memorable than the destination.

Watch the video and read along the transcripts below as he shares his passion for cycling.

SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW My name is Perry Healey and I am an elementary education student at the University of Nevada.

-long shot of Perry walking to house-

One of my passions when it comes to biking is going long distances. I like to travel, what they call touring on my bike.

I’ve been biking for about 5 years now. Ever since then, I’ve been biking.

-Medium shot of Perry walking with bike-

Biking everyday. Biking to school, biking to work, everywhere I need to go.

A lot of people I think look at biking as just a mode of transportation, just to get from point A to point B. But it’s really more than that. It becomes more of a community, almost. You’ll be biking down the street, especially when I’m going long distances, on popular bike routes, like I’m going to Verdi or Carson City or something, you see multiple bikers everyday, they always wave at you. You always get a wave, you always get a “hi” people are always interested of what kind of bike you have and what kind of style it is, and things like that.

-close up shot/extreme close up shot of bike

What I would say what differentiates is that tourers like to go really long distances. They still go from point a to point B, but point A is quite a bit further to point B.

ON THE GO INTERVIEW: Biking is something I stumbled upon. We had this idea to go to San Francisco, right? And we decided, “Hey why don’t we just bike?” At first, it seemed like a crazy idea, but then when you realize you can do it, and you realize that it’s possible, I think it’s something you have to do eventually. So ever since then, I just wanted to go further, wanted to go more places, I want to see how far I can push it.

RETURN TO SIT-DOWN The biggest trip I’ve done was my San Francisco to LA trip. Whenever you go on a bike trip, it’s really hard. The first couple of days, you’re really excited to where you’re going, you’re seeing all these beautiful sceneries and it’s amazing. But on day 3, you always want to give up, it’s the worst day, your legs are just dead tired, you’re tired of sitting on the stupid bike seat, it’s exhausting! But when you push through that, once you get past day 3, it’s better… it’s good. You’re getting this rhythm where you just coast.

TEXT: It took Perry 8 days and 600 miles to finish his San Francisco to Los Angeles Trip

ON THE GO INTERVIEW: I like biking because it just makes sense to me. I can get anywhere I want to go without spending a bunch of money, I don’t  have to pay for gas, I don’t have to pay for car insurance. It just makes economic sense. And I try to consider the environment a lot in everything I do, and biking has such a small impact on the environment compared to cars, and busses and all of that. Biking has done so much for me, and that gives me a way to give back to the environment and it’s just something I love to do.

-close up of Perry riding bicycle. Handlebar scene-

When you bike, I feel you get a… it’s more accomplished…you feel like you have more of an accomplishment.

-wide shot of Perry riding away. Pan up with text scene.

You’ve achieved something greater because you worked really hard. The best thing about biking, and what differentiates it between a car or a motorcycle, is that you really get to appreciate where you’re going.

We were assigned to cover an event in our small town of Reno that is newsworthy. Since this is a summer class, covering the annual farmers' market was not such a bad idea! Fruits, vegetables and even Tupperwares, it seems that the farmers' market is breaking its boundaries by expanding its variety! Hit the play button and read along below with the transcript.

HOST INTRO:  School’s out and so is the sun! Reno locals are either going to Lake Tahoe for a swim while others are visiting the local farmers’ market. Miguel Arucan has more of the update!

01:47 098 WHAT’S GOING ON MY MAN? –VENDORS CONVERSTION

In the middle of a sunny, summer day, shoppers at the Summit not only have the option to buy clothes from department and retail stores but they also can buy fresh produce, fruits and pastries at the heart of the outlet mall.

Shirley’s Farmers’ markets run from June to September every Tuesday and Saturday at the Summit and at the Village.

(Nat sound: Vendors and shoppers conversate)

Like many summer goals, Jennifer, a graduate student from the University of Nevada, Reno, plans on changing her diet in a positive way.

/// JENNIFER ACT 1 ///

104 0:14 "I WENT TO THE FARMER’S MARKET BECAUSE I WANTED TO CHANGE MY DIET. I HEARD THAT BUYING PRODUCE AT A LOCAL FARMER’S MARKET IS A GOOD WAY TO START IMPROVING MY DIET.”

104 0:29 “YEAH, I BOUGHT THESE STRAWBERRIES FROM RODRIGUEZ FARMS AND THEY LOOK SO DELICIOUS!”

Out with fast food and in with fresh produce and vegetables, she visits the farmers’ market.

/// END ACT

Though vendors, such as the Cipponeri Family Farm has been participating for quite a long time. They say they are more than happy to provide fruits to places that do not get a lot fresh produce.

/// HEATHER MARCHANT ACT 2 ///

WE’RE SELLING LOTS FRUIT, MOSTLY STONE FRUITS BUT WE HAVE ORANGES AND CHERRIES TOO.

I KNOW FOR THIS AREA, IT’S A LOT HARDER TO GET FRUIT. WHERE WE’RE FROM, EVERYONE HAS FRUIT: THAT’S WHERE ALL THE FRUIT COMES FROM. SO TO GET FRESH FRUIT INSTEAD OF GETTING IT FROM A GROCERY STORE IS A BIG BENEFIT:

/// END ACT ///

Not only do we see fresh vegetables, fruits and meat but also jewelry, pet foods and even Tupperwares.

/// SHILO ACT 3 ///

090 "I AM A TUPPERWARE DIRECTOR.

TUPPERWARE’S BEEN AROUND FOR 68 YEARS AND IT IS ALL 100% BPA FREE AND HELPS PEOPLE SAVE TIME, SPACE, MONEY AND WASTE!

WE HAVE A GREAT FRIDGE SMART SYSTEM THAT IS ON SALE. PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO ADD LIFE TO THEIR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND BEING ABLE TO GET THE BEST PRODUCT IN THEIR KITCHEN.

/// END ACT ///

(Nat sound) FREE SAMPLES: COME AND TRY, ALL KINDS OF FRESH FRUIT! 01:20 095

/// CHRIS TISDALE MARKET MANAGER: ACT 4:

0095 0:38 MY AUNT, SHIRLEY, IS THE ONE WHO STARTED MARKETS IN NEVADA 25 YEARS AGO.

WE HAVE BEEN AT THE SUMMIT FOR 5 YEARS

ANY TOWN SHOULD HAVE FARMERS MARKET SINCE IT’S ALL ABOUT GOOD EATING. ALL OF MY FARMERS GROW THE VERY BEST PRODUCE. THEY USE THE VERY BEST WAYS TO GROW THAT PRODUCE. IT’S NOT A BIG FACTORY. ALL THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SEE IN THESE TENTS ARE THE FARMERS. THEY ACTUALLY GROW, PICK AND SELL THEIR OWN STUFF AND THAT’S A LOT BETTER THAN SOME BIG GIANT CORPORATE FARM THAT’S JUST SELLING YOU STUFF AT THE GROCERY STORE.

// END ACT //

Chris hopes that the farmers market will not only improve business, but also improve everyone’s lifestyle.

This is Miguel Arucan, signing out from the Reynolds School of Journalism.
